The European Parliament supported granting Ukraine the status of an EU candidate

The leader of the European People's Party in the European Parliament, Manfred Weber, supported granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for EU membership. He stated this in an interview with Deutschlandfunk.

“We need a message that Ukraine will become a candidate for joining the European Union,”— Weber said. In particular, the impetus must come from Germany, he said.

During her visit to Kyiv, the President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said that at the end of next week the EU will decide whether to recommend to member states to grant Ukraine the status EU candidate country. Von der Leyen appreciated the democratic processes in the country, at the same time she called for reforms in the fight against corruption.
